Blocks — What’s holding your back 🚧

--

Welcome to the final part of my series, “The Business Trilogy.” 🌟 And don’t worry, unlike Star Wars, we’re sticking to just three parts! Today, we’re diving into something called “Blocks” — basically, what’s stopping us from achieving what we want. 🚀

I firmly believe that everyone already has what they need inside them. There’s no lightning strike ⚡ or alien visitation 👽 required to unlock your potential — you’ve got it all already.

But if that’s true, why isn’t everyone just doing it, like the NIKE slogan says? 🤔 Well, we humans are a curious and fascinating bunch, and we all encounter these obstacles I like to call “blocks.” 🧱 These are what hold us back.

I’ve talked a lot about change, which is crucial in coaching — you might have seen my thoughts in Slater’s Pathway to Change. 🛤️ In this piece, we’re zooming in on the ‘Mindset to Grief’ part of that pathway, where most blocks play a significant role. But let’s be clear: we’re not talking about change itself, but rather focusing on these blocks and how to get unstuck from them. 🔄

I know talking about feelings might make some of you tune out, so I will break down these blocks into two categories and explore each one. 🧩 I’ll explain what they are and offer some tips for overcoming them. I’m not a clinical psychologist, so these are tips that I’ve picked up from people over time. It’s a whopper of an article — just skips to the ones that resonate with you.

Remember, experiencing psychological and emotional challenges is completely normal — it’s part of being human. 😌 While our focus here is on business and making positive changes, these principles are just as relevant in our personal lives. So, let’s dive in and start tackling these blocks together! 💪

Psychological Barriers

1. Fail (Fear of Failure) 🚫

- Definition: 💡

The fear of failure is a common psychological block preventing people from taking risks and trying new things. It often stems from past failures, negative self-talk, or a fear of disappointing others.

- Explanation: 📖

This fear typically arises in high-pressure situations like running a business, where success is crucial. Negative experiences can intensify this fear, leading to a focus on potential downsides over upsides.

- Solution: 🔑

Cultivating a growth mindset is key, where failures are viewed as learning opportunities. Emphasizing the value of all experiences and setting achievable goals can build confidence and resilience.

- Tips: 📝

1. Look for Silver Linings: In tough situations, seek hope and strength. This fosters resilience and a positive outlook, crucial for overcoming the fear of failure. 🌈

2. Open Up About Feelings: Being honest about your emotions can help address and conquer the fear of failure. 💬

3. Surround Yourself with Positivity: Engage with supportive people to lessen the impact of fear of failure and criticism. 🤝

4. Focus on Completing Small Tasks: Like washing dishes, doing small tasks builds a habit of completion, combating the fear of failure. 🍽️

5. One Thing at a Time: Concentrate on single tasks to avoid divided attention, aiding in overcoming the fear of failure. 🎯

6. Resist Immediate Negativity: Avoid resisting life’s challenges, as this can create tension and reinforce fear of failure. 🚷

7. Manage Expectations: Avoid expecting life to meet specific ideals to prevent disappointment and negative thinking. 🤔

8. Avoid Over-Generalizing Negatives: Expecting failure and focusing on negative outcomes deepens fear of failure. ❌

9. Identify and Manage Negative Triggers: Recognize and manage reactions to negative triggers to reduce fear of failure. ⚠️

10. Embrace Imperfections: Accepting that things won’t always be perfect helps deal with the fear of failure. 🌟

11. Let Go of the ‘Perfect Moment’: Waiting for perfection often manifests fear of failure; embracing the present is key. ⏰

12. Face Challenges Head-On: Understand that facing challenges is essential for happiness, helping to overcome the fear of failure. 🥊

13. Let Go of Unnecessary Ideals: Embrace flexibility and reality to combat the fear of failure. 🔄

14. Stretch Your Abilities: Stepping out of comfort zones diminishes fear of failure. 💪

15. Embrace Effort and Learning: Understanding that failure is part of learning can reduce the fear of failing. 📚

16. Avoid Selfish Focus: Self-centeredness can stem from fear of failure; focusing outward can provide growth opportunities. 🌍

17. Embrace Change for Growth: Avoiding change due to fear of failure can hinder growth; embracing change is crucial. 🌱

18. Acknowledge Past Experiences: Recognize past experiences without letting them define your present, reducing your fear of failure. 🔄

2. Doubt (Self-Doubt) 🤔

- Definition:

Self-doubt involves a lack of confidence in one’s abilities or worth, often leading to procrastination, perfectionism, and Imposter Syndrome.

- Explanation:

Typically stems from internalizing past failures or negative feedback and is exacerbated in challenging or unfamiliar situations.

- Solution:

Building confidence through small achievements, seeking feedback and mentorship, practising self-compassion, and recognizing one’s achievements can diminish feelings of impostor syndrome.

- Tips: 📝

1. Believe You’re Ready for the Next Step: Embrace self-belief and readiness for challenges to counter self-doubt. 💪

2. Take Full Accountability: Owning decisions and mistakes builds confidence and reduces self-doubt. 🌟

3. Openness to New People and Experiences: Helps overcome self-doubt by embracing new interactions. 👋

4. Be Loyal in Relationships: Builds trust and confidence, which can diminish self-doubt. 💞

5. Practice Gratitude Before Bed: Boosts self-esteem and counters self-doubt by focusing on positive achievements. 🙏

6. Focus Beyond What’s Wrong: Avoid fixating on flaws and errors; recognize positive aspects and growth opportunities. 🔍

7. Never Feeling ‘Good Enough’: Understand and overcome this pattern rooted in perfectionism and self-doubt. 🚫

8. Let Go of Past Mistakes: Holding onto past errors fuels self-doubt; focus on growth and self-acceptance. 🌱

9. Engage Fully in the Moment: Valuing effort and presence over perfection counters self-doubt. ⏳

10. Take Small, Manageable Steps: Focus on progress through achievable actions to overcome self-doubt. 🚶‍♂️

11. Recognize Excuses as Lies: Emphasizes taking responsibility and countering self-doubt and perfectionism. 🤐

12. Don’t Let Others Dictate Your Goals: Avoid external pressure that feeds self-doubt and perfectionism. 🛑

13. Acknowledge Your Wholeness: Recognize that your identity isn’t tied to individual flaws or failures🌈

3. Perfect (Perfectionism) 🎯

- Definition:

Perfectionism is the inclination to set unrealistically high standards and to critically evaluate one’s own work excessively critically, often hindering progress and satisfaction in accomplishments.

- Explanation:

Often rooted in a fear of failure or criticism, this leads to an endless pursuit of unachievable standards, causing procrastination, burnout, and dissatisfaction.

- Solution:

Focus on setting realistic and achievable goals, understanding that mistakes are part of growth. Emphasize the importance of the process over perfection to shift focus from flawless outcomes to continuous improvement.

- Tips: 📝

1. Accepting Less Than Perfect: Embrace imperfection and recognize the value of being ‘good enough’, directly countering perfectionism. ✅

2. Be Your Imperfectly Perfect Self: Encourages embracing and accepting one’s true self, which challenges the perfectionist mindset. 🌟

3. Practice Gratitude Before Bed: Cultivate gratitude to boost self-esteem and counter the negative aspects of perfectionism, focusing on positive achievements. 🙏

4. Focus on Continuous Improvement: Understand that striving for perfection is less important than ongoing personal and professional growth. 🌱

5. Embrace the Learning Process: Recognize that learning from mistakes is valuable for personal development and overcoming perfectionism. 📚

4. Tired (Change Fatigue) 😫

- Definition:

Change fatigue refers to a sense of apathy or resistance towards continuous change. It’s often triggered by rapid changes, insufficient support, or fear of the unknown.

- Explanation:

This fatigue commonly arises in environments with constant change or where changes are poorly managed. It can result in feelings of being overwhelmed and a loss of control.

- Solution:

Introduce changes structured, with clear communication about their reasons and benefits. Providing support and resources for adaptation and adequate adjustment time is crucial.

- Tips: 📝

1. Manage Stress and Take Breaks: Stay attentive to stress levels and take short breaks to avoid being overwhelmed by change. ⏸️

2. Avoid Petty Arguments: Steer clear of unnecessary conflicts to alleviate change fatigue. 🚫

3. Awareness of Attachments: Understanding the impermanence of situations can help manage change fatigue. 🍂

4. Stop Immediate Resistance: Resist the urge to oppose change immediately, as it contributes to feelings of fatigue. 💡

5. Embrace Current Realities: Avoid longing for past ways, as this resistance can intensify change fatigue. Focus on adapting to new circumstances. 🔍

5. Fear (Fear of Criticism) 😨

- Definition:

Fear of criticism involves apprehension about sharing ideas and taking risks due to potential judgment. It may stem from past criticisms, negative self-talk, or fear of being evaluated.

- Explanation:

This fear can stifle creativity and risk-taking, vital for business innovation and growth. It often arises from a deep-seated need for approval and a dread of rejection or judgment.

- Solution:

Create a culture of open communication and constructive feedback. Encourage viewing feedback as an opportunity for growth rather than personal criticism. Building a supportive network can also alleviate the fear of criticism.

- Tips: 📝

1. Give New People a Chance: Being open to new relationships and perspectives can reduce the fear of criticism. 👥

2. Cheer for Others’ Victories: Cultivate a supportive community mindset that values collective achievements, helping to diminish the fear of criticism. 🎉

3. Embrace Constructive Feedback: View feedback as a means for improvement and learning, not as a negative judgment. 🛠️

4. Build Confidence in Sharing Ideas: Practice sharing thoughts and contributions in a safe environment to overcome fear of criticism. 💡

5. Develop Resilience to Judgment: Strengthen the ability to accept and learn from criticism without taking it personally. 🛡️

6. Negative (Negative Thinking) 😞

- Definition:

Negative Thinking involves focusing on adverse thoughts, exaggerating potential negative outcomes, and ignoring positive elements. This mindset leads to self-doubt, fear of failure, and avoidance of risks.

- Explanation:

Such thinking patterns can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, where the emphasis on negative outcomes obscures the visibility of opportunities or solutions.

- Solution:

Engage in cognitive restructuring to challenge and alter negative thoughts with more balanced and realistic perspectives. Mindfulness and positive affirmations can also shift focus towards optimism and possibilities.

- Tips: 📝

1. Focus on Positive Outcomes: Cultivate an optimistic mindset by considering the possibility of positive outcomes, which counters negative thinking. 🌟

2. Nurture Your Relationship with Yourself: Prioritize self-care and self-love, crucial for overcoming negative thought patterns. ❤️

3. Practice Mindfulness: Stay present and aware, helping to recognize and dispel unhelpful negative thoughts. 🧘

4. Use Positive Affirmations: Regularly affirm positive beliefs about oneself and circumstances to foster a positive mindset. 💬

5. Seek Balance in Thoughts: Strive for a realistic perspective that acknowledges challenges and recognizes potential and growth. ⚖️

Emotional Barriers

Anxiety involves feelings of worry, nervousness, or unease about impending events or uncertain outcomes. While a common human emotion, excessive and persistent anxiety can evolve into an anxiety disorder.

- Explanation:

Small business owners may experience anxiety due to financial uncertainties, decision-making pressures, or concerns about the future of their business, especially when outcomes are unpredictable.

- Solution:

Employ stress-reduction techniques like mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing exercises. Seeking peer, mentor, or professional support can offer coping strategies and perspective. Managing time effectively and delegating tasks can alleviate anxiety by reducing workload pressures.

5. Journal Regularly: Use journaling as a tool for reflection and stress relief, aiding in processing emotions and reducing anxiety. 📓

6. Adjust Expectations: Avoid fixating on how things “should be” to prevent anxiety from unmet expectations. 🔄

7. Recognize Life’s Complexities: Acknowledge life’s grey areas and nuances to avoid extreme thinking that leads to anxiety. 🔍

8. Avoid Negative Assumptions: Stop looking for negative signs in others, which can cause undue stress and anxiety. ❌

9. Embrace Change: Adapt to new circumstances instead of longing for the past to lessen anxiety. 🌿

10. Take Action Despite Uncertainty: Overcome the stress and anxiety of waiting for the perfect moment by taking proactive steps. 🚀

2. Stress 😰

- Definition:

Stress is the body’s reaction to various demands, be they physical, emotional, or mental. While a certain level of stress is normal and can even be motivating, excessive or chronic stress can lead to physical and psychological issues, including fatigue, insomnia, headaches, and muscle tension.

- Explanation:

Small business owners often face stress due to multitasking, continuous decision-making, and the pressure to succeed. Prolonged stress can impair judgment and potentially lead to burnout.

- Solution:

Adopt work-life balance strategies and establish clear boundaries between professional and personal life. Regular physical activity, healthy eating habits, and sufficient rest are crucial for stress management. Seeking professional assistance for persistent stress is also recommended.

- Tips: 📝

1. Monitor Stress Levels and Take Breaks: Stay mindful of stress and incorporate short breaks to manage it effectively. 🍃

7. Embrace Active Patience: Engage in productive activities while being patient to manage stress better. 🔄

8. Distance for Perspective: Step back to gain clarity and reduce stress and anxiety. 🔭

3. Overwhelm 😵‍💫

- Definition:

Overwhelm is the sensation of being inundated or incapable of handling the demands of a situation. This feeling may arise from an excessive workload, insufficient time, or too many responsibilities, potentially leading to decreased productivity, anxiety, or depression.

- Explanation:

Small business owners often experience overwhelm when they attempt to handle too much without adequate support or resources. This can result in a state of paralysis, hindering decision-making and progress.

- Solution:

Task prioritization is key. Focus on the most important tasks, delegate effectively, and create a supportive team environment. Breaking down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks and incorporating regular breaks and downtime are effective strategies to combat overwhelm.

- Tips: 📝

1. Practice Self-Honesty: Recognize and manage feeling overwhelmed by being honest with yourself. 🤔

2. Accept Others As They Are: Relieve overwhelm by not attempting to change people, which leads to more peaceful interactions. 🤲

3. Maintain Key Relationships: Focusing on important relationships can help manage feeling overwhelmed. 🤝

4. Single-Tasking: Tackle one task at a time to reduce feelings of overwhelm. 🔍

5. Avoid Constant Resistance: Understand that resisting everything can overwhelm the mind and body. 🚫

10. Don’t Let Others Dictate Your Goals: Avoid external pressures that can lead to overwhelm. 🎯

11. Distance for Perspective: Sometimes stepping back is necessary to manage stress and gain clarity. 🔭

4. Frustration 😤

- Definition:

Frustration is a state of dissatisfaction or annoyance resulting from encountering barriers or difficulties. While a common human emotion, excessive or prolonged frustration can lead to feelings of anger, aggression, and even withdrawal.

- Explanation:

Small business owners may feel frustrated due to continuous obstacles, slow progress, or unmet expectations, which can impede effective problem-solving and decision-making.

- Solution:

Cultivate a problem-solving mindset, focusing on aspects within your control. Seeking external advice or team brainstorming can offer new insights. Periodically reassessing goals and strategies can also help alleviate frustration.

5. Discouragement 😔

- Definition:

Discouragement is a sense of hopelessness or loss of interest, often triggered by multiple setbacks or failures. It can significantly hinder perseverance and the achievement of goals.

- Explanation:

For small business owners, discouragement might arise from facing continuous obstacles or when efforts don’t yield expected outcomes, leading to a depletion of motivation and energy.

- Tips: 🌟

1. Focus on What You Can Control: Channel your efforts towards manageable aspects to combat discouragement. 🎯

2. Support and Celebrate Others: Cheering for others’ successes can boost morale and fight discouragement. 👏

3. Practice Forgiveness: Letting go and moving forward can alleviate discouragement and resentment. 🕊️
