The 5-Star Business Coach You Can Trust — Slater Coach
Local business is all about who you are dealing with; you want to know about them and work out if you can trust them. Slater Coach, also known as Brett Slater, is a boutique business coach in NZ, who focuses on a small number of clients, maybe 12 at a time, because of the personal attention required. I love business coaching, but I want it to be only some of what I am. So it’s close and personal. It’s private and confidential, so I can’t ask current clients to write reviews and give me stars or whatever just so that you can search up Slater Coach and work out if this is the sort of coach you might be interested in so that you can decide as to whether we make the first cut. That creates a marketing issue.
I have to respect my client’s confidentiality. Confidentiality is a founding principle of trust, along with honesty. Trust has to exist for a successful business relationship. As a professional business coach, I understand the importance of this trust.
So I sold my chartered accountancy business over seven years ago. My restraint of trade has expired, so I can now show you some reviews I had when I ran the accountancy practice. Of course, clients willingly gave these reviews and everyone I enjoyed working with. They are pretty old, but what they say is a testament to me as both a person and providing them with a service as an accountant. And you want to know what kind of person you would be dealing with and are committed to providing the level of service you want. They are not specifically about business coaching in isolation but might give you some insight into who you are dealing with if you come to Slater Coach.
Client Reviews
Here are some reviews — so all these reviews are 5 stars. Because we asked for reviews, then let’s be honest — we ask people that we like and think like us because we as humans want good reviews, not bad reviews, so no online reviews system is free from bias, but here goes:
- Julie Goodwin (8 years ago): “From the very first day I sat down with Brett Slater, a qualified business coach, I felt comfortable with him. I have been in business since 1999 and had a few accountants along the way, but for the first time in 15 years I can now say I have a business coach who really cares about my business and myself as a business owner. The team at Slaters are always approachable, friendly and very helpful.” — Julie Goodwin

Reviews are there to help you make an initial selection. The next step is to go through your shortlist and go and meet each coach on your list. Yes, it’s a bit like a dating site, but anyone who ever had a relationship go sour bets they had been more selective in the beginning and avoided a poor outcome. The same goes for a business coach — a little effort up front will increase your chances of getting a great match.
Why am I looking for clients if I’m a great business coach? Business coaching isn’t a “sign on, stay on” for life because of the challenging nature of coaching work. You have specific problems you want solved or goals you want to kick. Your list isn’t endless. Each of those on your list will take time, effort, energy and money. These things are also not infinite. So what happens typically is people take out a coach and get some stuff sorted, take a break and then go back with more stuff to sort. Because of that, my clients come and go. If I’m practical and valuable, clients will come back, and for me to fill up my calendar, I need a reasonable size pool. I work mainly in Hamilton, NZ, because face-to-face gives the best results, and small business owners who are prepared to get help in Hamilton, New Zealand, aren’t a massive group. Currently, there is room, so check us out.
